New India Assurance is a leading health insurance provider covering patients affected by numerous conditions such as vision defects. Coverage for in-patient, pre and post-hospitalisation expenses is ensured by New India health insurance plans. The overall coverage for Lasik surgery is capped up to the sum insured defined in the New India health insurance policy you choose. The insurer may place certain conditions, such as waiting period or others, before covering Lasik surgery under its health insurance plans. But do research the cost of Lasik surgery to pick the right plan having the optimum sum insured.

How Does New India Health Insurance Cover Lasik Surgery?

Yes. The cost of Lasik treatment is covered by New India Assurance health insurance coverage. As there is no need for a 24-hour hospital stay, the insurer covers this operation as a daycare procedure.

At one of the insurance company's network providers, the insured can receive cashless care. On the other hand, the patient may also be compensated for having the procedure at a hospital that is not part of the insurer’s network.

But not all Lasik procedures are covered by New India Assurance's surgical health insurance plans. These health plans only provide coverage for Lasik procedures done to treat refractive errors equal to or greater than 7.5 dioptres.

If you undergo Lasik surgery but have a refractive error of less than 7.5 dioptres, the health insurance company will reject the claim and you will be responsible for paying the procedure's costs.

However, all health insurance plans offered by New India Assurance Company would pay for the procedure if you have a refractive error due to an accident or another surgery.

However, after a waiting time of one or two years, certain insurance policies might pay for Lasik eye surgery. Therefore, to find out the waiting time that applies to your policy, it is recommended to check the New India health insurance policy document.

What is Lasik Surgery?

The laser refractive procedure known as Lasik surgery is used to treat astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. It entails modifying the cornea's shape using a specialised cutting laser to enhance vision.

Thus, having Lasik surgery, also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, relieves the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

The price of Lasik surgery can range from INR 10,000 to INR 1.2 lakh, making it a potentially pricey operation. You can pay more for a blade-free Lasik procedure than for one that uses a blade. Additionally, Lasik surgery is more expensive in metropolises like Delhi and Mumbai than it is in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Who Should Go for Lasik Surgery?

Patients who have foggy or blurred eyesight get Lasik eye surgery to improve their vision. Technology has made it possible for this surgery to be completed in around 30 minutes. Lasik procedure is crucial because it enhances a person's quality of life by allowing him/her to see more clearly. Patients are recommended to see a doctor about their eligibility for the procedure before having surgery. Following the surgery, taking rest is also advised for a few days. The health insurance policies that people choose can cover the cost of the surgery and any additional charges.

There is just one procedure that comes to mind when we consider vision correction: Lasik. As technology develops day by day, so do people's hopes and expectations for Lasik. But even with the most advanced Lasik techniques, there are still some circumstances in which it is not possible. The following situations cannot be treated by Lasik eye surgery:

  • The minimum age cannot be below 18 - By the age of 18, most people's glasses' strength tends to stabilise. By 18 to 20 years, the range of numbers from 3.0 to 6.0 may become constant. By the age of 22, numbers from 6.0 to 9.0 may become stable, whereas those beyond nine may or may not remain stable indefinitely.
  • Lasik isn’t advisable during pregnancy or breastfeeding - The female body experiences elevated hormonal levels during this time, which causes tissues to relax and boost eye power. Even though only 10% of cases may result in a rise in spectacle power, this percentage is still high enough to advise against having Lasik during this time.
  • The cornea must be sufficiently thick for Lasik surgery. A cornea that is too thin becomes a restriction- The core thickness of a typical Indian cornea is 530 microns, or 0.53 mm. By using SBK (thin flap Lasik) or the Bladeless Femto Lasik, one can safely correct power of -8.0 in this thickness.

In India, Lasik eye surgery can treat vision issues that afflict a huge portion of the population. Even though the operation is an expensive treatment, as long as you have New India Assurance health insurance coverage, you do not need to worry about money. Before filing a health insurance claim, though, be sure to verify the Lasik surgery waiting time and coverage.
