HDFC Ergo General Insurance Company offers the following types of two-wheeler insurance policies:

Third-party Liability Only-

Third-party liability only insurance covers damages to third parties due to your vehicle. Buying a third-party liability insurance plan for two-wheelers is compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Every bike owner who is buying a new vehicle is required to purchase a compulsory third-party liability insurance policy.

There are two types of liability only two-wheeler insurance policy offered by HDFC Ergo two-wheeler insurance. They are as follows- 

  • Single Year Liability-only Policy-
    This insurance policy covers liabilities against a third party for a period of one year only.
  • Long Term Liability Only Plan- 
    Long term liability only plan provides coverage against third-party liability on new bikes. The plan comes with a tenure of five years

Comprehensive Two-wheeler Insurance-

The comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy provides a wide coverage that includes third-party liabilities and damages caused to your own vehicle due to an accident, theft, or calamities. Comprehensive two-wheeler insurance is also known as a two-wheeler package policy.

According to the latest IRDAI guidelines, it is mandatory to buy a third-party liability plan of 5 years at the time of purchasing a new scooter or a bike. Along with the third-party liability insurance plans of 5 years, you can opt to buy one-year own damage under the bundle plan or a standalone own damage cover for one year.

  1. Third-party Liability-

  2. Fire and Explosion-
    Damages arising to your vehicle due to mishaps like explosion, fire, self-ignition or lightning are covered under two-wheeler comprehensive insurance plans.
  3. Calamities
    HDFC Ergo comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy provides coverage of damages caused by both man-made and natural calamities such as floods, terrorism, landslides, riots, earthquake, etc.
  4. Theft and Accidents- 
    Any serious damage caused to you or your vehicle due to an accident would be covered. Also, if your vehicle gets stolen the company will pay you for the losses to replace the bike with the new one.
  5. Personal Accident (if Opted) - 
    You can opt for personal accident cover under your HDFC Ergo two-wheeler insurance policy. Personal accident cover provides coverage against accidental death and permanent disablement. The cover can be availed for the driver/owner of the bike as well as for the pillion rider.

What does HDFC Ergo Two-wheeler Insurance Policy Not Cover?

There are certain permanent exclusions under the two-wheeler insurance policies of HDFC Ergo that you must be aware of. These include the following: 

  1. Contractual Liabilities-
    HDFC Ergo offers an all-round cover for your two-wheeler. However, contractual liabilities are not covered.
  2. Limitations as to Use- 
    If you use your vehicle in ways or for purposes beyond the limitations of use such as for organised racing, speed testing, etc. then the damage caused would not be covered.
  3. War and Nuclear Risk- 
    Any damage caused to the third-party or third-party property or to you or your vehicle because of war and nuclear risk remains uncovered.
  4. Illegal Driving- 
    If you drive your vehicle without a valid driving licence or under the influence of alcohol or drugs then you cannot make a claim under HDFC Ergo two-wheeler insurance policy as it is a permanent exclusion.
  5. Electrical and Mechanical Breakdown
    Any electrical or mechanical breakdowns remain out of the coverage under the two-wheeler insurance policy.
  6. Depreciation
    HDFC Ergo two-wheeler plans do not cover depreciation in the value of the two-wheeler
  7. Regular Servicing- 
    Cost of regular servicing of your two-wheeler is not included in two-wheeler insurance policies.
  8. Outside Geographical Limits-
    A damage or loss suffered by the vehicle or any liability arising to third-party due to an accident outside the geographical limits of India would not be covered.

  • Take Your Bike to a Networked Garage

After you inform HDFC Ergo of the claim, you would be informed of the nearest networked garage. Take your bike to the garage for cashless claims. If you get the bike repaired at a non-networked garage, the claim would be settled on a reimbursement basis.

  • Get the Bike Surveyed

The insurer would send a surveyor who would survey all the damages and losses caused to the vehicle. 

  • Submit Documents

You are required to fill up the claim form and submit the relevant documents along with the form like:

On receipt of the completed documents, the insurance company would process the claim and settle it. You will receive the claim computation sheet along with the entire breakup for your records. 

Renewing a Lapsed HDFC Ergo Two-wheeler Insurance Plan

If you forget to pay the premiums on time, your HDFC Ergo two-wheeler insurance would lapse. If you pay the premium within the grace period offered by the insurance company your policy will be reinstated. However, if the grace period has also expired, then you will have to call the insurance provider. The insurance company will inspect your vehicle and offer you a fresh quote.
