What happens when a person meets with an accident and damages a third party and their vehicle and suffers extensive damage to their car too? Their insurance provider will cover the loss depending on the terms and conditions of their four-wheeler insurance policy.

But what happens if the insured forgets to check the expiry date of their car insurance policy and the car met with an accident a day after its due date?

The car owner will not receive a single rupee as compensation as the car is now uninsured and will be liable to bear all the costs of repairs to the insured vehicle and third-party property and their treatment, as the case may be.

Importance of Timely Car Insurance Policy Renewals

A car insurance policy for a new car is valid for three years, but old car owners will need to renew their car insurance policy annually if they don't opt for multi-year plans. Many car owners do not wait for their car insurance policy to lapse because that could also result in the loss of accumulated insurance benefits and expose them to several risks.

No-claim Bonus

Insurance providers reward their customers for zero claims during the car insurance policy tenure as an incentive for them to avoid submitting claims. These benefits are of utmost significance to car owners as they reduce car insurance premium rates by up to half. A customer accumulates these benefits over the years but can lose if they don't pay even within 90 days of the due date of their car insurance policy.

Renewal of Car Insurance in the Break-in Period

Car insurance renewals are possible online, and vehicle owners can do so within a few minutes. But if the four-wheeler policy expires, you can renew it in the break-in period, up to 90 days after the car insurance expiry date.

However, if you fail to renew during the said period, the policy will lapse and need a thorough inspection by the car insurance company authorised official. The premium amount will also be much higher as you need to buy a new policy altogether.

Finding Out the Due Date of Four-wheeler Insurance Offline

Finding the validity of the car insurance policy is not challenging. We have a few ways by which you can find out the due date of your four-wheeler insurance policy and renew it within 15-30 days before it expires.

Car Insurance Policy

The insurer provides the insured with the car insurance policy that contains all relevant data, including the validity or due date. If, however, the insured misplaces the insurance policy and if the policy was bought online, the softcopy of the insurance policy would be in their inbox.

Regional Transport Office (RTO)

The Regional Transport Office registers and records all particulars, including four-wheeler insurance data. The insured can thus go to the RTO and obtain the status and validity of their car insurance policy by providing the vehicle's registration number. The insured can also get the car insurance validity information by visiting the RTO's website.

Find Out the Car Insurance Due Date Online

Alternatively, the insured can find their car insurance expiry date online by visiting the following sites:

The Insurance Information Bureau (IIB)

In 2009, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) set up a web portal, IIB, for the smooth running of the insurance industry in India. All matters, including the expiry date of a four-wheeler policy, are stored at the bureau. The website's main objective is to provide the insured with all information about their car insurance policy.

The insured can recover the expiry date of their car insurance policy by visiting the IIB website as follows:

  • Visit and log in to the website.
  • Click on the option to secure car insurance status.
  • The insured will need to input the registration number of their four-wheeler and its chassis number to obtain the validity of their car insurance policy from IIB. They must enter the same without leaving space or typing any special characters.
  • The website will display all the necessary information, including the validity of the car insurance policy, depending on the entered details.

Insurance Provider

The car owner can find out the validity of their car insurance policy from the insurance provider as follows:

  • Visit the insurance company's website, agent or broker (from where the car owner purchased the car insurance policy).
  • The insured must sign in using their mobile number, email ID, and password.
  • Enter the car insurance policy number.
  • The site will display the present status, including the validity of the four-wheeler insurance policy.

Parivahan Sewa

The Parivahan Sewa website receives periodic updates, so it contains all data relating to car insurance renewals or purchases. You can access the expiry date of your car insurance policy as follows:

  • Visit the Parivahan Sewa website and click on the informational services tab.
  • Click on the 'know your vehicle details' option on the drop menu.
  • The citizen login page will open up.
  • Input the phone number that relates to your car insurance policy.
  • The site will display all the information about your four-wheeler insurance policy and the due date for its renewal.

Conclusion

Forgetting to renew the car insurance policy on time is not something a car owner can afford to do. Because driving a car without valid car insurance papers is illegal in India, and the traffic police can fine you up to INR 2000 for the first offence and INR 4000 for repeated violations or imprisonment for three months. Suspension of the driving licence and car registration is also a possibility.
