Anyone wanting to drive a vehicle in India must have an authorized driver's licence. However, to obtain a Driving licence in Himachal Pradesh, however, one must first apply for and get a learning licence. After that, they can apply for a learner's licence online or otherwise.   • Driving licence for a two-wheeler with no gear: You should apply under this DL category if you want to drive a vehicle with no gear like a scooter.
  • Light, Heavy and Medium motor vehicle driver's licence: This is the type of DL you should have if you want to ride light, heavy or medium motor vehicle.
  • A driver’s licence for transport vehicles: Those who intend to drive a transport vehicle must apply for this driver's licence.

Eligibility Criteria to Get a Driving Licence in Himachal Pradesh

To be qualified to apply for a driver's licence in Himachal Pradesh, the applicant must comply with a set of conditions.

  • The applicant must be 18 years or older.
  • A licence permit must be held for at least 30 days but not more than 180 days.
  • All traffic rules and regulations must be followed.
  • The applicant must be at least 20 years old for a commercial licence.

To apply for a driving license in Himachal Pradesh, you must submit a self-attested copy of the following documents to the RTO.

How to Apply for Driving Licence in Himachal Pradesh

An applicant can choose an online or offline mode of applying for a driving licence in Himachal Pradesh. Let’s examine them: 

  • Online method: To apply online, visit Parivahan Sewa’s official website. Now, click on 'Driving licence related services,' and then on the 'Apply Online' tab. Now, select 'New Driving Licence’ and click on it. Fill out the application form and upload all the required documents. Now, pay the application fee online and schedule a date for the driving test.
  • Offline method: Visit the RTO office and collect the application form. Now, fill out the form and submit the documents. Pay the application fee and book a date for the driving test. If you qualify for the test, the RTO office will grant you a DL.

Availing a Duplicate Driving Licence in Himachal Pradesh

Following are the requirements to obtain obtaining a duplicate driving licence in Himachal Pradesh:

  • LLD Application form
  • Copy of FIR Report
  • Challan clearance report, in case the license is commercial
  • Age proof and address proof
  • Original licence’s copy
  • Licence number 

If you want to apply for a duplicate driving licence in Himachal Pradesh, you must provide the documentation listed below to the RTO. If your driver's licence is stolen, fill out the application form LLD and keep a copy of the police report.

How to Obtain a Renewed Driving Licence in Himachal Pradesh?

The following documents are required for driving licence renewal online in Himachal Pradesh: 

  • Copy of expired license
  • Form 9
  • Form 1A, if the holder’s age is more than 40 years
  • 2 passport-sized photos
  • Copy of age and address proof
  • Receipt of paid application fees

Obtaining an International Driving Licence in Himachal Pradesh

If you require an international driving licence in Himachal Pradesh, you can get one from any RTO in the state. An international licence is valid for 12 months and does not require a driving test. Anyone applying for an international driving licence must already have a permanent driver's licence.

  • Form 2, 1A and 5

The driving test in Himachal Pradesh is similar to other Indian states. A Motor Vehicle Inspector monitors tests at the RTO. An applicant must own a vehicle in the category as the one he has applied for a DL. He can also use the driving school's vehicle if he doesn't own a vehicle.
