3 Ways to Check Your Bike Insurance Expiry Date Online

28 June 2022, 4:31 PM

Motorists in India need to have certain specific information besides road rules, traffic signals and the driving process. For example, they need to know about vehicle registration, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certification, driving license, etc.

Vehicle insurance is probably the most forgotten element regarding the formalities required for driving on Indian roads. Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) data shows that the percentage of uninsured vehicles on Indian roads was a whopping 57% about a couple of years ago.

There are multiple reasons for motorists not renewing their bike insurance policies. While inadequate policing on Indian roads is one reason, high insurance costs also force some motorists to flout the rules. Additionally, insurers also fail to follow up with motorists pending renewals, giving them ample reasons not to renew their motor insurance policies.

As is evident from the various provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, the Indian government is committed to reducing road accidents in the country. As per the new rules, the fine for driving without insurance has been increased from INR 1,000 to INR 2,000. Moreover, any motorist caught violating the rule may be imprisoned or have to do community service for three months. Also, for repeated violation of the rules, motorists may have to pay a fine of INR 4,000.

Hence, renewing your motor insurance policy is beneficial and imperative if you want to drive legally on Indian roads. A motor insurance policy provides financial support to a motorist’s family if the motorist dies in a road accident. It also covers the damages inflicted on a third party caused by an accident. So, if you have not already renewed your motor insurance policy, now is the best time to do so. The following sections mention the top three easy ways to find the expiry date of your bike insurance and renew it online.

3 Easy Ways to Find the Expiry Date of Your Bike Insurance Online

Insurance Information Bureau

The Insurance Information Bureau, or IIB, is an all-in-one place for finding everything related to the insurance industry in India. IIB acts as the interface between insurers, regulatory bodies and customers. It was established by the IRDAI or Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India in 2009 and registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act in 2012.

IIB’s official website provides an easy way to check your bike insurance's expiry date online:

  • Open the official website of IIB on your web or phone browser.
  • Look for the ‘Quick Links’ tab on the Home page.
  • Locate the ‘V Seva’ tab
  • After clicking on the tab, a form named ‘Accident Vehicle Information Retrieval Form’ will be displayed. You have to enter the requisite details in the form, such as your name, mobile number, email address, vehicle registration number, residential address and accident date (if applicable).

IIB will scan the list of active and closed policies bought on or after 1st April 2020 to check whether your policy details match any policy. If your policy details match with a policy in their database, the website will display all details, including the expiry date of your bike insurance policy. However, the details will not be displayed if you bought the insurance policy before 1st April 2020.

It is wise to note that a customer can check the expiry date of their bike insurance through the IIB portal only three times using the same phone number and email ID. If you want to search more than three times, use a different phone number and email ID.

You may also fill out the query form on the IIB website to receive a phone call from an executive. When you receive the phone call, tell the executive that you wish to know about the expiry date of your bike insurance policy. The executive will ask for the details mentioned above and inform you of the date.
