The Chandigarh RTO was formed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, section 213(1). The Chandigarh Administration's Transport Department oversees providing an effective public transit system, controlling vehicular pollution, car registration, issuing driving licences, issuing different permits, and collecting road fees.

Chandigarh RTO's primary responsibility is to carry out the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Chandigarh Motor Vehicle Rules of 1990. Driving licences are issued by the Registering and Licencing Authority, and the State Transport Authority issues registration certificates and permits. Functions of Chandigarh Transport Department

  • Driving licence: Includes the issue of different types of licences, including learning licence, permanent licence, renewal, duplicates, class additions, and international driving permits.
  • Conductor licence: Form CL is used to provide conductors of stage carriages with their permits.
  • Registration of Motor Vehicle: Trade Certificate issue, temporary or permanent registration, renewal, duplicate issue, HP Endorsement, and HP Termination are the registration paperwork and certificates available from the department.
  • Fitness/NOC: If you present the relevant documents with your application, such as a Certificate of Registration, Insurance, Pollution Under Control, and proof of payment for the Motor Vehicle Tax, you will be awarded a no-objection certificate.
  • Online Permits Application and Objection System: Temporary permit, renewal, duplicate issue, transfer, vehicle replacement, CNG, and LPG retro fitment are the various types of permits that are issued.

How to Get Vehicle Registration in Chandigarh?

There are two types of vehicle registrations done under Chandigarh RTO:

  • Temporary Vehicle Registration: When a new vehicle is purchased, a car dealer issues this registration. It can be used for the first week from the vehicle’s delivery date, with an extension of up to 30 days. Following that, the vehicle owner must compulsorily apply for a permanent registration card.
  • Permanent Vehicle Registration: As quickly as possible, you must get a valid vehicle registration certificate issued by the RTO office. Following the submission of all relevant documents, the applicant receives the same.

Transfer of Ownership in Chandigarh (CH) RTO

For transfer of ownership of a vehicle under Chandigarh RTO, there are three scenarios:

  1. Normal: Here, the transferor has to notify the change in ownership in which both the transferor and transferee reside or commence business.
  2. Death: In this case, the owner’s successor can use the vehicle for 90 days after informing the authorities, as if the asset has already been transferred to them.
  3. Auction: When the vehicle is bought at an auction held on the State or Central Government’s behalf, it must be registered under Chandigarh RTO within 30 days of possession.

Registration Renewal in Chandigarh (CH) RTO

The application for renewing your Certificate of Registration at the Chandigarh RTO must be made in Form 25. The RC renewal application must be submitted two months prior to the date of expiration. The documents required are:
