The Tamil Nadu Transport Department is governed by the provisions Section 213 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, in the state of Tamil Nadu (TN). The main objective of the Tamil Nadu Regional Transport Office is to promote road safety, provide relief to the victims of road accidents, and control pollution emanating from vehicles. It governs the road safety laws through Central Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 2007 and Department of Transport (Motor Vehicles Maintenance Department) – Service Rules.

Functions of Tamil Nadu Transport Department 

The different functions performed by the Tamil Nadu Transport Department are:

  • Driving Licence: It issues Licence such as permanent, learner's, renewal, duplication, international driving permit, etc.
  • Conductor Licence: It issues Licence for conductors of stage carriages.
  • Registration of Motor Vehicle: It issues registration certificates (RC) to transport and non-transport vehicles, permanent and temporary registrations, etc.
  • Fitness/NOC: On submitting requisite documents, the department carries out tasks such as issuing fitness certificates.
  • Online Permits: The TN RTO department also issues online permits for various commercial vehicles.

How to Get Motor Insurance in Tamil Nadu (TN)?

As per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, all vehicles must have proper insurance before plying on the road. The types of motor insurance to choose from are comprehensive motor insurance and third-party motor insurance.

How to Get Car Insurance in Tamil Nadu?

For purchasing car insurance in Tamil Nadu, you may opt for online or offline processes comprising varying insurance providers, insurance premiums and other features for you to compare.

How does RTO Impact your Vehicle Insurance Premium in Tamil Nadu?

The TN RTO influences the vehicle insurance premium you pay. The risks associated with a particular vehicle type, locations across Tamil Nadu, etc., are the main factors that affect your insurance premium. Therefore, vehicles registered in Tier 1 need to pay a higher premium on account of the increased risk of theft, accidents, vandalism, etc., compared to others.

How to Get Tamil Nadu Vehicle Registration Details?

As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, if you buy a new vehicle or transfer a vehicle from another state, you must register the vehicle at the appropriate TN RTO office. The dealers may also apply for registration on behalf of the vehicle owner. 

Vehicle Registration Type in TN RTO

The two main types of vehicle registration available in Tamil Nadu RTO are:

  • Temporary
  • Permanent

A temporary motor registration is issued for 30 days. Its application is made with Form 20 under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. For permanent registration, the application process is done within seven days from the date of delivery of your vehicle form 20 is used for the application process. 

Ownership Transfer in Tamil Nadu RTO

Under TN RTO, you may apply for ownership transfer under three scenarios:. 

  • When the vehicle is registered with Tamil Nadu RTO, the application Form 29 is filled in and Form 30. The requisite fee is paid as per the department.
  • When the vehicle is registered in an outside state, fill in Form 20 along with Form 27 and Form 29.
  • In case of death, the successor can use the vehicle for three months as if the vehicle has already been transferred to the successor after informing the authorities.

Renewal of Registration in Tamil Nadu RTO

To renew your Certificate of Registration at Tamil Nadu RTO, the application shall be made in Form 25. You should have the following documents for the renewal:

  • Registration certificate
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate
  • Valid tax token
  • Insurance certificate

Duplicate R.C.

For issuance of a duplicate Certificate of Registration at Tamil Nadu RTO, the application shall be made in Form 26. You should have the following requirements:

  • Police Certificate
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate
  • Valid Tax Token
  • Insurance certificate
  • No objection certificate from financier
  • Details of tax paid in last 4 quarters
