The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 mandates that all vehicles have sufficient motor insurance coverage before being considered roadworthy. As such, the onus for getting adequate insurance coverage is on the vehicle owner/operator before they are legally allowed to operate their automobile. They have the option to choose between going with either comprehensive insurance coverage or opting for third-party insurance.

The Motor Vehicles Act makes it mandatory to carry third-party insurance for your two-wheeler at all times. In the Gandhinagar RTO office jurisdiction, you can opt for this type of insurance in either off- or online mode. Once you have shortlisted a preferred insurance provider and selected a plan, please check for your two-wheeler insurance premium, which will be calculated based on age, make, and model. The Gandhinagar RTO office plays a crucial role in how the premium for your vehicle insurance is calculated. As per current practice, the different RTOs in the country have been graded based on risk, and this has a direct impact on the premium charged by the insurance provider. Metro City RTOs come with a higher premium due to the associated risk of accident, theft, or vandalism, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with a lower population and lesser vehicular traffic carry a lower premium burden.
For all vehicles registered at the Gandhinagar RTO, owners have the option of either temporary or permanent registration, depending on the state of ownership.
Temporary: For new vehicles, a seven-day temporary registration is available, which needs to be made permanent within this time. Vehicle owners need to submit their applications by filling in Form 20. Vehicle owners also have the option of extending the temporary registration using the same form.
Permanent: After the expiration of your temporary RC, you need to apply for a permanent RC. The application process is straightforward and can be made through Form 20.
Ownership transfers fall under three categories. Faor a direct sale, both the present owner and the buyer must inform the RTO covering their place of residence or business. In case of the owner's death, the successor has the right to operate the vehicle for three months. Within this period, they must inform the respective RTO of the change in the ownership status. And finally, for vehicles purchased at State or Central Government auctions, the owner must register the vehicle under their name within the mandated period of 30 days.
All vehicle registrations need to be renewed at least 60 days before the expiry of the current registration. Applications to that effect need to be made on Form 25, indicating the owner’s possession status of the vehicle, the R.C. Book, and the Pollution Under Control Certificate.
Application for a duplicate registration needs to be made on Form 26, supported by a Police certificate. Applicable fees (as prevalent per the latest government regulations) will have to be paid in all instances where the owner is seeking to register their vehicle with the RTO, be it for new, acquired, or renewals.
