When you buy a vehicle in India, it is absolutely crucial to register it in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to get a registration certificate. Driving a car or riding a two-wheeler without a valid RC is against the law and a punishable offence. So if you live in Gandhinagar city, registering your vehicle at Gandhinagar RTO is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Talking about GJ-18 RTO, it performs many vital functions and duties on a daily basis.

Conducting driving tests for LL & DL, issuing new DL & RC, transferring vehicle ownership, issuing fitness certificate & special permit, and collecting road tax are some of the main functions of the Gandhinagar RTO. Every city has its own RTO office, which maintains the database of all the vehicles and drivers. So if you want to find an RTO office in your nearby location, you can easily do so below.

Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) catering to this planned city operates under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Gandhinagar RTO office maintains records of the driver- and vehicle-related information and grants. It renews driving licences, permits, and registration certificates for private and commercial vehicles in the city. Under the overall guidance of a Transport Commissioner appointed by the state government, the Gandhinagar RTO office is also responsible for collecting road taxes. It is further empowered to conduct special inspections at check-posts within its jurisdiction area to ensure compliance with relevant government regulations.

Functions Performed by the Gandhinagar Transport Department

The different functions performed by the Gandhinagar RTO office include:

  • Learner’s Licence Services: The Gandhinagar RTO office issues, renews, and monitors learner licences for those learning to drive automobiles within its jurisdiction.
  • Permanent Licence Facilities: Individuals need to approach the relevant RTO office for a permanent driving licence on passing the stipulated exam. The RTO office also maintains a record of all licences issued, offers renewal services, and updates the information as requested by the licence.
  • Vehicle Registration: All vehicles within the RTO jurisdiction area must be registered with the Gandhinagar RTO. This includes both commercial and private vehicles, which must meet the predefined criterion to be issued with a registration certificate. The registration certificate, once issued, must be renewed periodically to ensure that the vehicle is deemed roadworthy.
  • Transfer of Ownership: The Gandhinagar RTO needs to be informed in case of any change in vehicle ownership. This includes the leasing, hypothecation, endorsement, or outright sale of vehicles. No transaction will be deemed valid without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO office.
  • Issuance of National Permits: This is particularly relevant for local commercial vehicles that wish to operate across RTO and state boundaries. Without the relevant national permit, the movement of commercial vehicles outside their defined area is deemed illegal, and therefore a permit must be obtained for smooth operations. The Gandhinagar RTO office is empowered to issue all forms of relevant national permits to allow for free vehicular traffic across the country.
