When you buy a vehicle in India, it is absolutely crucial to register it in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to get a registration certificate. Driving a car or riding a two-wheeler without a valid RC is against the law and a punishable offence. So if you live in Gandhinagar city, registering your vehicle at Gandhinagar RTO is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Talking about GJ-18 RTO, it performs many vital functions and duties on a daily basis.
Conducting driving tests for LL & DL, issuing new DL & RC, transferring vehicle ownership, issuing fitness certificate & special permit, and collecting road tax are some of the main functions of the Gandhinagar RTO. Every city has its own RTO office, which maintains the database of all the vehicles and drivers. So if you want to find an RTO office in your nearby location, you can easily do so below.
Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) catering to this planned city operates under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Gandhinagar RTO office maintains records of the driver- and vehicle-related information and grants. It renews driving licences, permits, and registration certificates for private and commercial vehicles in the city. Under the overall guidance of a Transport Commissioner appointed by the state government, the Gandhinagar RTO office is also responsible for collecting road taxes. It is further empowered to conduct special inspections at check-posts within its jurisdiction area to ensure compliance with relevant government regulations.
Find RTO Details by Registration Number
The different functions performed by the Gandhinagar RTO office include:
There are different RTO codes for different States and Union Territories in India for easy identification of the RTO location based on the vehicle's number plate. The different RTO codes for States and Union Territories in India are as follows:
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 mandates that all vehicles have sufficient motor insurance coverage before being considered roadworthy. As such, the onus for getting adequate insurance coverage is on the vehicle owner/operator before they are legally allowed to operate their automobile. They have the option to choose between going with either comprehensive insurance coverage or opting for third-party insurance.
Car insurance is available in the Gandhinagar RTO jurisdiction in both offline and online modes. As the owner, you have the choice of comparing the car insurance packages on offer from various insurers, both in terms of premium and other coverage features. Once you have zeroed in on a provider of choice, please follow these steps for finalizing your coverage:
Please remember to carry your insurance coverage details as a part of your in-vehicle documentation at all times. Alternatively, you can have them stored in your DigiLocker app for digital access on your smartphone.
The Motor Vehicles Act makes it mandatory to carry third-party insurance for your two-wheeler at all times. In the Gandhinagar RTO office jurisdiction, you can opt for this type of insurance in either off- or online mode. Once you have shortlisted a preferred insurance provider and selected a plan, please check for your two-wheeler insurance premium, which will be calculated based on age, make, and model. And then, please follow the steps mentioned in the previous section to acquire the mandated insurance cover.
The Gandhinagar RTO office plays a crucial role in how the premium for your vehicle insurance is calculated. As per current practice, the different RTOs in the country have been graded based on risk, and this has a direct impact on the premium charged by the insurance provider. Metro City RTOs come with a higher premium due to the associated risk of accident, theft, or vandalism, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with a lower population and lesser vehicular traffic carry a lower premium burden.
For all vehicles registered at the Gandhinagar RTO, owners have the option of either temporary or permanent registration, depending on the state of ownership.
Temporary: For new vehicles, a seven-day temporary registration is available, which needs to be made permanent within this time. Vehicle owners need to submit their applications by filling in Form 20. Vehicle owners also have the option of extending the temporary registration using the same form.
Permanent: After the expiration of your temporary RC, you need to apply for a permanent RC. The application process is straightforward and can be made through Form 20.
Ownership transfers fall under three categories. Faor a direct sale, both the present owner and the buyer must inform the RTO covering their place of residence or business. In case of the owner's death, the successor has the right to operate the vehicle for three months. Within this period, they must inform the respective RTO of the change in the ownership status. And finally, for vehicles purchased at State or Central Government auctions, the owner must register the vehicle under their name within the mandated period of 30 days.
All vehicle registrations need to be renewed at least 60 days before the expiry of the current registration. Applications to that effect need to be made on Form 25, indicating the owner’s possession status of the vehicle, the R.C. Book, and the Pollution Under Control Certificate.
Application for a duplicate registration needs to be made on Form 26, supported by a Police certificate. Applicable fees (as prevalent per the latest government regulations) will have to be paid in all instances where the owner is seeking to register their vehicle with the RTO, be it for new, acquired, or renewals.
You have to pay a fee of INR 1500 for registering a heavy motor vehicle under Gandhinagar RTO.
The Learner’s Licence is delivered on the same day of the knowledge test.
A fitness certificate is applicable for applicants above the age of 50.
Replacement is allowed for conversion to solar/electric/CNG/LPG. The replacement should only be made with the same make and model for all other cases.
The office hours for Gandhinagar RTO are 10 AM - 5 PM.
