Lakshadweep RTO was established in 1990 under Section 213 (1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The RTO is headed by a transport commissioner in the tiniest Union Territory spread over 32 square kilometers. Lakshadweep RTO is empowered to deal with various regulatory and enforcement functions enshrined in the governing act. Thus, it implements road safety, pollution control, registration, and licensing measures for an effective and safe transport system. Accordingly, LD RTO Office administers the single district and 10 sub-districts located in the capital on Kavaratti Island.
