Chennai is a city under the jurisdiction of Tamil Nadu State in India. The Chennai RTO was established under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 under section 213, with the responsibility to enforce all such traffic rules and regulations made under the section. The Andhra Pradesh Transport department is also responsible for supporting the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1963, and the Tamil Nadu State RTO.

Functions of Chennai Transport Department

  • Driving Licence: Chennai RTO Office's primary function is to issue DL, duplicate and renew DL and international permits.

How does RTO Impact Your Vehicle Insurance Premium in Chennai?

The Chennai RTOs also impact your vehicle insurance premium in Chennai City due to the following reasons-

  1. The risk associated with the Vehicle
  2. The location
  3. Insurance companies will segregate the country into zonal codes depending on where it is registered
  4. Tier 1 cities have to pay more premiums because the population percentage is very high
  5. Tier 2, 3, 4 cities are paying less insurance than Tier 1 cities

How to Get Vehicle Registration in Chennai?

Vehicle registration is one of the primary functions of Chennai RTO. After filing the necessary Chennai Vehicle Registration details, you can obtain the vehicle RC. This can be done through Chennai RTO online services by visiting the website or via offline mode by visiting in person.

1. Vehicle Registration Type

There are two types of registration, namely-

  • Temporary- Its validity ranges from 1 week to 1 month, issued by the authorized dealer itself.
  • Permanent- You need to apply at the Chennai RTO office before the temporary RC expires.

2. Ownership Transfer

Ownership can also be transferred with Chennai RTO in the following three scenarios:

  • Normal Transfer- Under Normal transfer, the ownership is transferred from the original owner to the buyer. The place of residence of both the owners needs to be filed. Place of business must be mentioned in case of no residence.
  • Death Case - The successor can only use the Vehicle for three months after the death of the legal owner. He/she needs to take a permanent registration under the application form 31 within these three months.
  • Public Auction - Under Form 32, a vehicle needs to get registered with the possessor. A certificate authorized by the person conducting the auction needs attestation and the form.
  • Renewal of Registration

The competent authority will inspect the Vehicle when presented before the District Transport Office to renew the registration. You need to submit the following documents within 60 days of the expiry of the old RC.

  • Form 25
  • A copy of the old RC
  • A copy of the Insurance certificate
  • Payment proof of road taxes till date
  • PUC (Pollution under control) certificate

3. Duplicate RC

Duplicate RC is issued when your original RC is lost or stolen. Under Rule 81 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, a prescribed fee must be paid to obtain a duplicate RC.

Below docs are also required along with the form:

  • An application under Form 26
  • Copy of pollution under control certificate (PUC)
  • Copy of valid FIR.
  • Copy of Insurance Certificate

  • 1. Can I bring my Vehicle directly to the Chennai RTO office to get it registered?

    Yes, you can bring your Vehicle during the registration process.

  • 2. Till when will my vehicle insurance policy period be valid?

    Generally, the policy period is valid for up to a year only. However, you must apply for renewal before the policy expires.

  • 3. How can I get an advance number for my Vehicle in Chennai RTO?

    You must obtain a letter from the RTO. If the number falls under 1000 numbers with the RTO from the recent series, RTO will assign you the advance number.

  • 4. What application form is required for terminating hypothecation?

    You need to submit the following details under form 35-The NOC Insurance certificate PUC Road tax submitted.

  • 5. What happens if I fit LPG or CNG in my Vehicle?

    If so, you need to inform the authority (DRTA), and they will make necessary changes to your registration details.
