Functions of Trivandrum Transport Department

  • Issuance and Renewal of Driving Licence: Trivandrum RTO conducts the test of the drivers for the issuance of licences. Similarly, the department is also responsible for the renewal of the licences. Trivandrum RTO also issues the international driving licence to qualified candidates. Issuance of licences for conductors of stage carriages is also approved by Trivandrum RTO through Form CL.
  • Issuance of Registration Certificate & Associated Jobs: Trivandrum RTO office is responsible for issuing temporary as well as permanent registration certificates. The issuance of the duplicate certificate, ownership transfer, updation of address, etc., is also performed by Trivandrum RTO.

How does RTO Impact Your Vehicle Insurance Premium in Trivandrum?

The Trivandrum RTO influences the vehicle insurance premium paid by the user. The country is divided into different 'Insurance Zones' by the insurance providers based on the risks involved along with the vehicle and location.

How to Get Vehicle Registration in Trivandrum?

If you purchase a new vehicle or transport a vehicle from another state, it is mandatory to register the vehicle at the applicable Trivandrum RTO office without fail, as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. 

Vehicle Registration Type in Trivandrum RTO

Temporary: The temporary registration of the vehicle is furnished along with the purchase of a new vehicle. The validity of the temporary registration is one month, and it is obligatory to pertain to the permanent registration before the expiry of temporary registration. 

Permanent: You should obtain permanent registration before the expiry of temporary registration to prevent any legitimate deficits. The permanent registration can be obtained by visiting the nearest Trivandrum RTO office. 

Ownership Transfer in Trivandrum RTO 

Under Trivandrum RTO, the certificate of registration can be transferred in certain cases. 

  • Transfer in Case of Purchase by Another Party: It is mandatory to replace the old owner’s name on the registration certificate with the new owner’s name when a vehicle is purchased.
  • Transfer in Case of the Demise of the Owner: In the event of the registered owner's death, the legitimate successor must notify the RTO within 30 days of the incident. The new owner can use the vehicle for 90 days.
  • Transfer of Ownership in Case of an Auction: The ownership has to be transferred mandatorily if the case of vehicle auction. The name of the original owner must be replaced with the name of the new owner on the certificate of registration.

Renewal of Registration in Trivandrum RTO

To renew the certificate of registration at Trivandrum RTO, the application shall be made in Form 25. The form should be submitted 60 days prior to the date of expiry. You have to submit the form with all the necessary documents at the Trivandrum RTO office along with the form.

Duplicate Registration Certificate in Trivandrum RTO

The application shall be made in Form 26 for the allotment of a duplicate registration certificate at Trivandrum RTO. The fees for availing the duplicate registration certificate are determined under the Motor Vehicles Act 1989, rule 81.

You are required to provide the following documents to the registration authority at the Trivandrum RTO along with the form:

  • Copy of police FIR in case of stolen, lost or damaged registration certificates
  • Current and updated PUC (Pollution Under Control Certificate)

    Applicants aged between 16 and 18 years are eligible to apply for a driving licence, along with the written authorization from the parents or legal guardian for riding a motorcycle below 50cc.

    Firstly, visit the official Trivandrum RTO website and fill and submit the ownership transfer certificate online. It should be done jointly by the seller and buyer. After the submission of the form both parties will receive the OTP on their registered mobile numbers to authenticate the request. Once everything is in order, you will have to submit scanned copies of required and supporting documents along with the signature on the duly filled application form. The whole procedure should be completed within a month of the transaction of the vehicle took place from old owner to the new one.
