RTOs or the Regional Transport Office, act as a governing body for the vehicles in the area. It works under the provision of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Kanpur Transport Department, like all the RTOs, is responsible for the issuing of the driving license (DL), learner’s licence, permits for transport and non-transport vehicles, Registration certificates. How does RTO Impact Your Vehicle Insurance Premium in Kanpur?

The RTOs with which your vehicle is registered is taken into consideration by the insurance company while drawing up your insurance policy and premiums. This is done because of the insurance zones. How to Get Vehicle Registration in Kanpur?

You need to register your vehicle with the city RTO under which jurisdiction you live. It has made mandatory by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. You also have to register your vehicle to the Kanpur RTO even if you are moving temporarily there. 

Vehicle Registration Type 

Mainly, there are two types of vehicle registration certificates that you can get at the Kanpur RTO as follows: 

  • Temporary:

A temporary registration certificate is issued to those vehicles that are there in the city for a short period. These registration certificates have lesser validity than the permanent registration certificate. Once the validity expires, you can extend it. 

  • Permanent:

Permanent registration certificates are issued to the residents who live under the jurisdiction of Kanpur RTO. This type of registration has longer validity than the temporary one. 

Ownership Transfer

Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 mandates it for the vehicle owners to transfer their vehicles registration from the previous owner to the current one in the following scenarios:

  • Within the three months of the death of the owner of the vehicle, the deed and the registration must be transferred from the previous owner to the new owner.
  • If you purchase the previously owned vehicle, and both of you reside in the jurisdiction of the Kanpur RTO then it is considered as the simple registration and will be easily taken care of in the transportation office.
  • Auction purchased vehicles need to be transferred from the previous owner to the current one within one month of taking possession of the vehicle.

Renewal of Registration

After the expiry of the date of the vehicle registration, you can renew it at the Kanpur RTO. It needs to be done in 60 days of the expiry of the registration of the vehicle. You must duly fill and submit form number 25 along with the RC book and the PUC (Pollution Under Control Certificate) at the RTO to initiate the procedure. As per the provision in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 you need to own a vehicle for the registration of the vehicle. 

Duplicate RC 

You need to fill and submit form 26 at the Kanpur RTO along with the police certificate and the Pollution Under Control certificate to get a Duplicate RC Book. It is mandatory under rule 81 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989.

Transfer of RC in Case of Death

The legal heir can drive the vehicle for up to 3 months and he/she has to re-register within these 3 months with the requirements of the following documents-

  1. Application in Form 31
  2. Affidavit
  3. Legal heir Certificate
